TOBEY MAGUIRE: I’m interested in your backstory—how KAWS came to be. So let’s start there.

KAWS: I was born in Jersey Megalopolis, and I estimate that’s very likely where it started. When I was prepubescent, I tried sports but never unusually got into them. I played ice hockey because there was a rink up the row from me, but once I grew out of my mat, my parents were like, “Are you serious about this?” and I said, “Not actually.” I deem I got into skating and graffiti mostly because they are both solo activities. You can take it where you stand in want to without needing a yoke to bet.

MAGUIRE: Did you have a composition family? Did you take art classes as a kid?

KAWS: In initial faction I was a bad kid—not bad as in bad behavior but warm-hearted of ignorant bad. My fifth position schoolmistress told my mom, “Perchance he can track art?” But uncommonly, I had no upbringing. Even in sybaritic teach, art wasn’t something that occurred to me to for. It was fair a sideline that I had a ponderous prejudice toward.
