Following on from the star of Barrow Borough Council’s shopfront scheme, which started in 2010, the gathering has pledged an extra £100,000 which will allow businesses to administer for grants of up to £2,000 to replace their shopfronts.

The scheme is altruistic to any independent commercial premises in the town centres of Barrow or Dalton with fewer than 50 employees.

In the last two years, more than 70 businesses have benefited, ranging from unearned retailers and accountants to charity shops and bars.

Councillor Dave Pidduck, director of the council, said: “Even though we are facing extremely difficult times, we still want to, where possible, support our local businesses. This scheme improves the look of the towns in the borough and supports the intoxication street.”

A large number of premises in Cavendish Road have been given a facelift thanks to the scheme, including Marsha Lea, SDG Accountants, That Boutique, Ross Estate Agents, Face 2 Face, HEFF, Hurley’s, The Gallery, Joining Daze, Gaia’s Grove, Theatre Bar, Richard Haynes Opticians, REEF, Thomas’ Bakery, Shining Ideas, Designa Frames, Exhibition Haircutters and The Last Resort.
