Ed Maier remembers a rhythm not long ago when only 42 beer breweries remained in the United States.

The year was 1974 and Schaefer was the the human race’s best-selling beer with Schlitz, Genesee and Stroh’s still fashionable at the corner tavern. Miller Lite was just a year old and was officially called “Lite Beer from Miller.”

“The effort was caving,” said Maier, great-great-grandson of close by brewing icon Charles Stegmaier. Things were so bad that Maier sold his next of kin’s brewing label and names that year to the Lion Brewery in Wilkes-Barre.

The effort began to brighten in the 1990s as beer became more popular and home brewers and inconsequential craft brewing companies began springing up with unique flavors. The upstarts included Samuel Adams, which would go on to become the largest American-based brewery until it was passed by Yuengling Brewery in Pottsville.

Yuengling, about 60 miles south of Wilkes-Barre in Schuylkill County, is America’s oldest brewery but it’s not the only one in the department. In addition to the Lion Brewery in Wilkes-Barre and Susquehanna Brewing Co. in Jenkins Township, there’s also Breaker Brewing Players in Plains Township, 3 Guys & a Beer’d Brewing Co. in Carbondale, Barley Rivulet Brewing Co. in Tannersville, Benny Brewing Co. in Newport Township, Shawnee Artisanship Brewing Co. in Shawnee-On-Delaware and Turkey Hill Brewing Co. and Old Devise Brewing Co., both in Bloomsburg. All are within 60 miles of Wilkes-Barre.
