Any decorating ideas for wall above fireplace?

My lady and I moved into a new refuge recently. While we're almost finished decorating and buying furniture, we've run into a place regarding our fireplace. Right now, there is a very large broken framed mirror hanging on the bulkhead.
what is your decorating look? contemporary? traditional? what is the fireplace surround material? wood, friend, stone?
either way, i think mirrors are the best because they bounce unsubstantial around the room.
