August is normally thought of as the silly season for news. I beg to differ. January has to be in bed with August.

Not even fetching into account our wacky, unpredictable weather, look around. There are pink flamingos on Maintain Street. Nice, bright pink ones that one can only wish were truthful. Oh, yes! This makes one smile.

May I suggest some pink neon, too? A fun sign here or there would be great eye confectionery in this gray, dull time of the year. Do any of you remember the whimsical martini glass in pink neon that once flanked the side of the construction on lower Ceres Street? That was seriously cool. Too much of the same makes the brains dull, don't you think?

Buoyant laughter, dare I say giggling (can men cackle?) thrill me as I listen and watch. Those chaps from the Department of Public Works not only seem to drudgery very hard, but they manage to do so in a gleeful manner. Yahoo! Just this former Monday, I watched with glee as they deftly, swiftly, unloaded our bins, all the while chattering away and laughing (or was that giggling?) as they did their jobs. Isn't it smashing to see our tax dollars benefiting us in this way? Can you imagine if trash removal were left to individuals?
