Restaurant Review: Upstairs at the Ten Bells in London

The indication won’t mean much if you’re at the Ten Bells to drink. But follow the notice and you’ll find a restaurant secreted away on the second floor run by two adept young chefs who call themselves the Young Turks. The atmosphere changes at the top of the stairs. It feels less like a pub than a dinner fete thrown in a tastefully frayed town house. Intimate conversations thrum at the tables; all the diners are in on the connivance — if you made it here, you belong. (The menu changes weekly; tables tome up well in advance.)

The Young Turks are Isaac McHale (formerly of the Ledbury ) and James Lowe (formerly of St. John Bread and Wine close by). It might seem like an odd pairing — the Ledbury is a Michelin-starred restaurant with modernist tendencies, while St. John Bread and Wine is British cooking at its most uncomplicated and flavorful — but their comestibles draws on both backgrounds.

There’s a set four-course menu that kicks off with a cocktail and a around of snacks that sound fussy but are just the ballast you need to start the gloom.
