I use 14 AWG copper wire on mine, there is not a desperate situation for them to be clean, it would not matter at all. I have a 1 / 2 "gap on the bottom, and it goes up to 2 1 / 2 feet to a 2" gap that ignites quickly beyond that.

A yoke of thoughts:

Balanced neon sign transformers have the output centertap grounded to the cause, so each leg only puts out 7500V. Perhaps you could use one leg.

Secondly, if you reduce the input voltage, the output voltage will slim down correspondingly.

Since the last draftee reported for job in December 1972, Uncle Sam has had to scuttle to shaft an all-volunteer armed drag.
